Watch American Netflix in Canada
NOTE: This post has been updated! Check out the post How to Get American Netflix for the most recent information and instructions
I've had numerous people ask me about watching Netflix U.S. from places other than the United States. Here's some basic facts about this:- If you have a Netflix Account (trial or paid) from ANY region, you can login to Netflix while physically in any OTHER region and watch their content. So if you are traveling in the United States and login to Netflix, you'll be able to watch American content.
- Netflix is able to determine by your IP address (and perhaps some other magic) where you are logging in from, and show you the content for that region.
So how do I watch American Netflix?
The key to this process is to fool Netflix's system into thinking you are in the U.S. You could do this manually by sending your Internet traffic through an American proxy, or perhaps tunneling traffic through a connection to an American server...but that's beyond the skills and patience of most people.
So then what?
Enter Blockless
I found the Blockless system super-easy to setup, and it worked for all my devices without hassle. Plus, they have a 7-day free trial that lets you see for yourself that it works.
Free trial? Sure ... they take my credit card information and then hope that I don't cancel in time, right?
Actually, I was quite surprised to see that all they need is your email address and a password. Because their system has to recognize the IP address you're coming from in order to work, I guess they don't have trouble with people abusing their free trial system.
Here's how it works...
Step 1: Signup
Go to blockless and sign-up (if you use my link, I get a small kickback, so please use it :-) ). As promised, all you need to enter is your email address and a password.
Step 2: Setup your devices
After creating your account, you'll be presented with two DNS IP addresses (write these down) and a link to the Setup Guide. There are two ways to get going with their system:
Setting up your whole house or network is the easiest for getting everything working all at once, but from my experience, dealing with routers can be tricky. However, they have instructions for 8 different brands of internet routers, and I can't think of one they've missed.
Setting up a specific device is probably the easiest way to try out the system really quickly to see if it worked. For my first test, I setup my laptop (since it was already right in front of me).
In either case, what you are doing is changing your DNS servers to the two IP addresses you wrote down earlier.
What's a DNS server?
A DNS server is what translates www.google.com into 74.125.227.68, or www.netflixable.com into 23.21.91.105. It's the real ip address that your computer needs in order to visit a website, and it gets this from a DNS server.
Step 3: Reboot...maybe
They suggest restarting your device (either your router, computer, or other device), and I know why. Even though you may not need to, a reboot is the easiest way to refresh all your settings...just do it...
Step 4: Enjoy
Now you can go to netflix.com and watch American videos...easy! If you only signed up for the trial, they'll eventually send you an email about signing up for real.
Step 4.5: There's more than just American Netflix
You may also have noticed on their homepage that this service is for more than Netflix U.S.A. You can also access other American-only content from the following sites:
Hulu
Pandora
BBC iPlayer
ABC
A&E
Biography
Bravo
CBS
|
Comedy Central
the Daily Show
the Colbert Report
Fox TV
Food Network
the History Channel
Spike TV
...and more I didn't feel like typing...
|
Conclusion
If you're looking to watch American web-content, but don't live in the United States, Blockless is a great system, and I recommend it.
Full Disclosure: The links to Blockless, UnblockUs, and Unotelly are "affiliate links", meaning I do receive a kickback if you use those links and sign up for their service. I do still think that my review is reasonable, but it's only fair to let you know...

I did exactly what the instruction stated for the router set-up and restarted my laptop but no option on which country's content I would like to use. Was the router supposed to be rebooted as well?
You forgot to mention the Blockless link is an affiliate link and you are being paid by them?
Is there anyway of knowing on which content (US or Canadian version) I'm viewing now coz it seemed like after the set-up, there are more selection but no indication on which one.
Good point. I've added a disclaimer to the bottom of the post to remedy that.
The only way that I know of is to login to their website (from a computer) and check which "channel" or "country preference" is currently selected (https://blockless.com/channels)
Router reboot may be required, but not usually (in my experience).
Does the Broadband speed slow down when using Blockless?
Will streaming rate allow for 1080p?
Does it work for playstation?
Lately I've had some issues with streaming stopping and needing to catch-up for a few seconds.
Not sure about 1080p.
Definitely works with playstation. We use it at our house on computer, Android tablet, playstation, and Wii. If you set it up through your router, it works for any device within that network.
Hi there,
I recommend another DNS provider, UnoTelly.com, which use two simple DNS to let you see movies in the States or other countries. The setup is very easy; I spent less than 10 minutes by their instruction to complete all the work. Now I am enjoy watching those movies on Netflix, Amazon Prime Huluplus, etc.
I am sure you would like it too.
I've seen that one too. I should probably add it to the list above. Thanks for the feedback.
There's only one bit I don't understand. I don't see any prices on the Blockless website. Do you know how much it costs?
What does Blockless do that justifies paying them every month. If I just change my IP address to either of the two IP addresses that they suggest, won't this work without monthly payments to Blockless?
The cost shows up when you select the "Sign Up" link...and it's $4.95Usd/mn.
Well, this is going to get a little technical, but the quick answer is that it won't work without paying them.
You aren't actually changing your IP address, but rather your DNS server. Every time you visit netflix.com (or any other website), your computer "asks" their DNS server where to find the netflix.com (or the other website). And before their DNS server responds, it checks to see if your IP address has an active account with them. If not, it won't send you to their private Netflix-bouncing-server which is what allows you to view Netflix from other regions.
Have you noticed that even with these DNS servers, it is no longer possible to access your Instant Queue on Wii, computer or TV in anything but your Canadian account? I can still access US content, but the IQ and ability to add to it are no longer there for US Netflix.
I don't use those features much, but I have noticed that when I switch between them, I don't see my "previously watched" items. I think Netflix stores that data separately for each region, which would also explain your issues.
I use a service called Show Monkey https://showmonkey.com/ They offer a 7 day free trial so you can try it out. I use it on my PS3, Xbox, iPad, etc. It's been working great and it's only $5/month. Great value considering all the content it unblocks for me.
Interesting, I've never heard of that one. However at a glance, it looks like the price is roughly the same but the only extra Netflix region they give you is USA. These other services give you multiple regions to choose from, which is good because often Latin America gets a movie before anyone else.
Thanks for the heads-up though!
my router is TP Link and i cannot find it in the list. how do i set it up?
The steps will be very similar to what they suggest, but you will have to "dive into" the settings in your router. You can always contact Blockless directly and they'll be able to help you.
The key is changing your DNS setting, which you can probably find by poking around. The hard part is usually getting access to your router. I'd suggest opening up your web browser and typing in the URL "192.168.0.1" or "192.168.1.1". The username and/or password is probably some combination of "admin" and empty fields (eg. username admin, password ).
Good luck.
Hi, this all very technical for me. I know nothing about computers. By reading all comments it looks easy but..I don't know, I don't understand half of the comments I just read. I live in Montreal, Canada and my question is do I have to cancel the account I have with Netflix Canada before trying the setup?
Thanks
It is moderately technical, however Blockless will give you whatever help you need to change your router settings.
You do NOT need to do anything with your Netflix account. Your Canadian Netflix account will let you login to Netflix in any region (whether you are using this service or actually travelling around the world).
I'd suggest that when you feel like giving this a try, sign up for the free trial from Blockless and give it a whirl!!
I don't actually have an Instant Queue either, but perhaps Julie does. I read somewhere that it has been released in Beta to some Canadians...not sure how you get on that list.
The instant queue is only available to canadians. It's a nice feature, that I do miss when watching US netflix.
Hi
I can't find how it works with blue ray, what can I do?
Thanks
i have a WD Medi player and use the WD Live TV on it and it isnt listed in the devices....if i jsut set this up through my router, will it work for my media player??
Sorry, I don't have any experience with that device. I'd suggest you talk to Blockless support. I would expect that setting up your router would work just fine, since that usually takes care of ANY device within the network. Maybe give the free trial a try and see if you can get it working.
Get the "Media Hint" addon for Chrome, it makes your chrome connect to the US netflix. Free and no need to download any strange proxy software.
Can you please tell me exactly what Netflix Instant and Netflix Instant Queue are, and what is the difference if any between them? I have a Netflix Canada account and have not seen any mention of either of these services.
sorry dude tried everything didnt work for me. I am sold if it works but it did not for me
yeah doing this is dangerous as all your traffic is potentially being fed through a proxy via dns poisoning. i would suggest you only use these dns servers for traffic to the specific domains like "*.netflix.com" or whatever so you don't potentially get all your traffic proxied through these "providers"
Whoops, I deleted this comment from Betty Cameron by accident when I tried to publish it (sorry Betty)
"Do you need to sign up to blockless before you sign up to Netflix? "
And here's the answer:
Nope. The order doesn't matter, but in most cases it makes sense to sign-up for Netflx first (or at least the trial), and try it out first normally. Then, once you've figure out how to make it work, then try out Blockless. If you time it right, you can have a free trial of both and see if you like it before you have to pay anything. However, watch out for Netflix, as they require your billing information even for the free trial, so they'll "get you" if you don't cancel in time.
I don't believe this would be classified as "dns poisoning". However you're right, all your traffic "could" be fed through their own servers. They claim that only netflix domains are redirected, and the rest are resolved via Google's DNS servers, but I've never checked.
I've set up unblockus already but when I try to sign up for netflix, it wants my Credit card number and a zipcode. Will they send the us programming if the Credit card info is Canadian?
Absolutely. Netflix doesn't really care where the money comes from, so use your proper Canadian credit card billing information. After that, you just appear to be "travelling" as far as Netflix is concerned.
That's how mine is setup (Canadian card and billing address), and I switch regions all the time!
Hi, I've got US Netflix (from Canada) streaming through my XBox. XBox recognizes my 5.1 surround sound but US Netflix does not! Everything only comes through in stereo. Any suggestions?
I live in the us and I'm trying to get netflix Canada. There is a show that has more seasons on there than the us version. Will this work for me?
Sure will. Works in any "direction".
Hi, Thanks for all the work u have done. I am a senior with very wide interests and Canadian selections of netflix seem too poor to me. I will try signing up with blockless and see what happens.
I can't figure make and model of wireless router installed by Telus in my home. I have optik TV and internet service from telus. The router has two antennas. Can anyone help. Thank you.
Actually the instant queue is hardware dependent. When i had a Panasonic smart plasma it only had the feature to play instant queue and no search. Once i had tied this tv to my account i could get instant queue in the USA and when visiting Canada. When moving back to Canada, my tv was damaged and i decided to exploit the netflix new account offer and hey presto i lost the instant queue. A Netflix engineer confirmed this when i complained.
Still can't get Hulu in the UK/
You can also use USAccess ( www.usaccess.ca ). They have a special that is over half price of blockless and usaccess!
You can also use USAccess ( http://www.usaccess.ca )
Right now they are running a special for $25/year
Interesting. However, it looks like it only has American content, not the other regions that Blockless provides. I've been finding lately that Netflix UK has a lot of titles that I want to watch that I can't find in the US (example: the Hobbit)
You just need to modify your DNS IP addressing in the network settings of the management console. You can also get the manual online from Telus Internet Services webpage help section.
hi Josh,
i am using netflix through smart TV , how can i use blockless through a smart TV?
Easiest way is to set it up in your home router, because that will work for all your devices. Otherwise, you need to find the DNS settings on your TV. However, I read an article recently that said that some smart TVs actually have Netflix IP addresses hardcoded into the TV and they don't change, so these systems won't work without a more complicated vpn system.
Hi Josh, does this still work? can i switch back to canadian netflix and USA netflix back to back?
It sure does, and you sure can! I find that with my Wii I typically have to turn it off and on again after I switch regions to see the new region. My PS3 is a little more finicky...seems to need a day before it switches over, but maybe there's a way around that. On my computer I just close all my browser windows and re-open them and it will switch to whatever new region I've chosen.
Works great! Give it a try...it's a free trial with no credit card required.
In Steps 3 and 4 above, it appears that by rebooting, the DNS might be permanently been changed to a USA DNS, but your answer above of Oct 8 seem to indicate otherwise.
I want to be able to access Canadian sites (not just Netflix, but also, say, CTV, CBC, Global, etc.) which require a Canadian DNS. So, how easy is it to change your whole system DNS back and forth between USA and Canadian, and is the change to the USA DNS for sure just temporary?
Thanks Josh
You're getting a little of the theory confused...let me try to explain it better.
DNS is like the phone book that your computers/Wii/XBox/etc use to figure out how to connect to Netflix, and the phone numbers are like the IP addresses for computer servers. Once you've done steps 3 and 4, your computers now use Blockless' "phone book".
So when you try to go to Netflix.com, your computer talks to Blockless and asks "How do I talk to Netflix.com"...what's the phone number (IP address)
Blockless then checks which region you have selected within their web interface. If you selected USA, it tells you which server to use (kinda like giving you the Netflix USA phone number). Then later, if you login to Blockless and change your desired region to the Canada, the next time you go to netflix.com it will ask Blockless for the "phone number" again and this time will receive the Canadian phone number/IP address. The actual DNS setting is only set once and you use it as long as you are signed up with Blockless.
The reboot is because most devices "remember" the phone number/IP address until they are rebooted (it's a little more complicated than that, but that's the basic idea). If you don't reboot, your computer/device won't ask Blockless for a new phone number, so it won't change regions.
Hi I was wondering why American Netflix does not have south park episodes? For one thing south park is a American show
